HAWCS supports the charitable organisation Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), and the work of Dr Ian Singleton who is a leading Primate and Amphibian expert. ‘SOCP is a collaborative initiative of Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL), the PanEco Foundation, an active charity founded in 1996 in Switzerland ,and the Indonesian Governments Directorate General of Natural Resource and Ecosystem Conservation’ which are all working towards the re-introduction to their natural habitat of the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelli) and Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis).
SOCP has established a medical quarantine centre in the forest north of Medan in Sumatra where orphaned, displaced and confiscated Orangutans taken from the illegal pet trade can be nursed and cared for and taught how to be wild again, before returning them to a protected areas of forest.
For the Orangutans that cannot be released back into the wild, due to health problems and disability SOCP have built an Orangutan Haven where they can remain in safe large naturalistic islands. This new centre is being developed to incorporate and education resource for the region, promoting animal welfare, species and ecosystem conservation. One of the other animals to feature at the Haven is the Flying fox (fruit bat), encouraging local people to appreciate them for their intrinsic value and the value they bring to the forest ecosystem.
HAWCS aim is to continue to raise awareness and funds in order to assist and promote SOCP and Dr Singleton’s ongoing work in order to facilitate for the future viable populations of Sumatran Orangutans in the wild. For further information of the work of SOCP and to donate directly to this project please see www.sumatranorangutan.org
